Here's a nice tutorial for shooting fireworks http://digital-photography-school.co...eworks/I'd suggest getting a remote, one of the wired remotes is best for a situation like shooting fireworks. You'll avoid jiggle in your camera that way. They do have wireless remotes, but you need to be in front of the camera and they do not work as well in the dark...

Basically, what you need to do is hold your camera very still. If possible, get a tripod. You also want to use a higher iso, perhaps 800 or higher so that you can utilize a faster shutterspeed (1/100 or faster). Test your camera at these settings and see if you can capture moving traffic at night without having the car lights look like smears accross the photo. If the lights are smearing, try to turn your shutterspeed to 1/200 or 1/300. If the photo starts to look darker and darker, turn your iso up some more. You can also increase the exposure compensation if the photos are getting darker when you increase the shutter speed. The remote will help you activate the shutter without moving the camera when depressed. Fighting camera shake is extremely important, especially if your lens or camera does not have image stabilization. Good luck!

Place camera on tripod and point towards where fireworks are going to be going off (setting lens for widest angle). Set Camera for Manual (M) exposure. set shutter speed for 10-20 seconds and aperture at f8. When you see a firework launch, push the shutter button and step back. the long shutter should catch the entire explosion. If you leave the shutter open longer (20-30 seconds) you might catch 2-4 explosions in the same frame.

I am not sure about the 400d, but my Canon a95 has a setting for fireworks. I used it this past 4th and they were the best fireworks pictures I have ever taken.
